For our inaugural lecture of the 2016 – 2017 season, we are visited by a member of the Coptic Heritage Society of Alberta (CHSA, www.albertacoptic.org ) who is going to talk to our chapter about the Coptic Period in Egypt (42 CE – 640 CE). Through their lecture, the audience will learn about Coptic history and influences of the various civilizations that ruled Egypt after the decline of the ancient Egyptian dynasties; including the Hellenistic, Roman , Byzantine , Persian and Islamic phases.
About the speaker:
Dr. Jehan Joseph Bastawros born into a Coptic family 1953 and received a Bachelor’s of Pharmacy , Cairo University 1976, followed by a Master of pharmacy in Biochemistry and laboratory analysis 1990. They have studied Coptic theology, history and monuments at the Coptic Orthodox Church , Heliopolis , Cairo. In 1989, they received a certificate in Egyptology and operated as an official licensed tour guide by the Egyptian Ministry of Tourism from 1990 – 1994. In 1994, they relocated to Canada and worked as a tour guide to St Mark’s Coptic Museum in Toronto before relocating to Alberta in 2001. They have served as an active board member of the Coptic Heritage Society of Alberta (CHSA) since 2011.
