The Calgary Chapter of the SSEA is marking December as a special “Holiday Event” for our membership. Please join us for an hour-long video presentation about the 20th Dynasty tomb robberies and how they embody a symbolic ‘close’ to the New Kingdom in ancient Egyptian history. At this event, we plan to have a bit more variety of food and drinks as well as a more extensive book-raffle. It’s a great time to to kick back and relax to avoid the hectic backdrop of the holiday season.

Best known for her novel, A Thousand Miles up the Nile (1877), Amelia Edwards’ travels in Egypt had made her aware of the increasing threats directed towards the ancient monuments by tourism and modern development. Determined to stem these threats by the force of public awareness and scientific endeavor, Edwards became a tireless public advocate for the research and preservation of the ancient monuments. Join us for an evening that is sure to be illuminating on this remarkable woman’s life.

For our inaugural lecture of the 2016 – 2017 season, we are visited by a member of the Coptic Heritage Society of Alberta (CHSA, www.albertacoptic.org ) who is going to talk to our chapter about the Coptic Period in Egypt (42 CE – 640 CE). Through their lecture, the audience will learn about Coptic history and influences of the various civilizations that ruled Egypt after the decline of the ancient Egyptian dynasties; including the Hellenistic, Roman , Byzantine , Persian and Islamic phases.
