Description:
Coinage of the Ptolemaic Kingdom
The advent of coinage had little influence on ancient Egypt before Ptolemaic times. The Ptolemaic dynasty introduced coinage to Egypt, which was in use during the last dynasty of Egypt and, briefly, during the Roman rule. For most of its history, the kingdom vigorously enforced a policy of a single currency, confiscating foreign coins found on its territory and forcing its dominions to adopt Ptolemaic coinage. After Egypt was annexed into the Roman Empire and the Ptolemaic dynasty ceased to exist, its currency remained in circulation until the time of Emperor Nero.
Coins from the University of Calgary’s Nickle Numismatic Collection will be available for viewing.

Description:
An overview of gold and its occurrence in Ancient Egypt, with brief comments on its properties, mining, smithing, trade, value and use. What were its sources, and where was the ‘Land of Gold’? Gold objects from Egypt are not common, most having likely been recycled, but several spectacular finds and exquisite workmanship, combined with the allure of treasure, mean that gold plays an important part in our view of this ancient land. Illustrated with various objects of gold including some of the most iconic items from Ancient Egypt.
