The ancient people of the Nile Valley have always had a deep connection with jewelry. Sometimes worn as talismans, they also have a deep aesthetic appeal that connects with museum-goers today. It appears by all accounts that jewelry was worn by all classes of Egyptian society. Although most of these adornments come to us today are found from funerary contexts, they are a lasting testament to the ancient Egyptian artisans’ skill and expertise in making some of these impressive, delicate pieces. In this lecture, we will survey a variety of ancient Egyptian jewelry and gain a better appreciation of what purpose they served in pharaonic society.
About the speaker:
Julius Szekrenyes is the former president and advisor of the SSEA’s Calgary Chapter Executive Board. He has had a life-long interest in Ancient Egypt and has taught Ancient Egyptian History through the University of Calgary’s Continuing Education Department for 16 years.
