An overview of gold and its occurrence in Ancient Egypt, with brief comments on its properties, mining, smithing, trade, value and use. What were its sources, and where was the ‘Land of Gold’? Gold objects from Egypt are not common, most having likely been recycled, but several spectacular finds and exquisite workmanship, combined with the allure of treasure, mean that gold plays an important part in our view of this ancient land. Illustrated with various objects of gold including some of the most iconic items from Ancient Egypt.
About the speaker:
Paul English is a retired geologist who first became interested in Ancient Egypt over 30 years ago whilst working in Cairo and took his first course on Egypt at the Maadi Community Center. On returning to Calgary he took courses on Ancient Egypt through Continuing Education at the UofC (taught by Julius Szekrenyes) and has since studied aspects of Egyptology at the Bloomsbury Summer School and via online courses from the universities of Exeter, Pennsylvania and Harvard.
His masters research was on gold deposits but most of his career since has been in the petroleum industry. He is a long-time member of the SSEA, having served on the Board of Trustees for several years, and is also a member of the Egyptian Exploration Society and the American Research Center in Egypt, as well as numerous geoscience organizations.
